Hi kaiowolf,

as already said, you will not accept any functioning bug playing your games from a modern USB iii.0 external drive as long as yous brand sure you are using a newer bulldoze series.

Additionally, our own and independent research on current hard bulldoze series exercise non show significant differences in bulldoze reliability. Present objectively all major difficult drive manufacturers are working hard to optimize performance as well every bit reliability with each new generation of drives. If the right drive type is used in each scenario, modern hard drives usually final much longer than their minimum life fourth dimension expectancy.

Therefore, RPM is not necessarily the only factor y'all should take into account. In regards to performance and lifetime expectancy, you should consider the main purpose of your new drive(s). Since you mentioned gaming and are looking for performance, we would recommend a mod BarraCuda or -even amend- a BarraCuda Pro (whereas for case in a NAS environment which is usually operating 24/7, you should use specific NAS hard bulldoze(s))

Happy gaming with your new setup!

Yes, you will manage to play games off your external hard drive with no loss of gameplay quality (except for potentially longer loading times, merely that's merely a small-scale price to pay), provided you are willing to conduct an extra box effectually if you travel.

Most full general-purpose external hard drives are 2.5", which is what y'all are probably used to. For a proper difficult bulldoze to play games with, you'll definitely want a 7200rpm one, which (as far as I know) but three.5" drives are capable of. These are a scrap heavier and bulkier, hence why I mentioned the extra box.

I would recommend the Seagate Expansion 2TB (3.five" version). Although I accept never used it personally, it has great reviews and appears to be the virtually popular ane every bit well.

Seagate Expansion 2TB - Amazon UK

If you make up one's mind to buy this one, just make sure to specifically become the iii.5" version! Like I said, the ii.5" is limited to 5400rpm, which I would not recommend.

Hope this helps! - Chris

Howdy kaiowolf,

as already said, you lot will not have any performance bug playing your games from a modern USB 3.0 external drive every bit long as you make certain you are using a newer drive serial.

Additionally, our own and independent research on electric current hard bulldoze series do not show pregnant differences in drive reliability. Nowadays objectively all major hard drive manufacturers are working difficult to optimize operation likewise equally reliability with each new generation of drives. If the correct drive type is used in each scenario, mod hard drives normally last much longer than their minimum life time expectancy.

Therefore, RPM is not necessarily the only cistron you should take into account. In regards to performance and lifetime expectancy, y'all should consider the main purpose of your new drive(due south). Since you mentioned gaming and are looking for performance, nosotros would recommend a modernistic BarraCuda or -even better- a BarraCuda Pro (whereas for instance in a NAS surroundings which is usually operating 24/seven, you should use specific NAS hard bulldoze(southward))

Happy gaming with your new setup!
