In 1965 the Silver Historic period of comics was in full swing, with all of DC's iconic heroes starring in their own titles likewise as in the the Justice League.
One element that DC more often than not lacked at the time was the youthful energy of Marvel'south Silver Historic period titles, which included hip young heroes like Spider-Homo and The 10-Men alongside more iconic DC analogs like The Avengers or Thor. Information technology wasn't that they lacked for young characters. It seemed the every DC hero had a teen version of sidekick. They hadn't been assembled all in 1 identify.
That inverse with The Dauntless and The Bold (1955) #54 in 1964, which combined Gilded Age creation Robin (Dick Grayson) with the more recently-fabricated sidekicks of Kid Wink (Wally West), and Aqualad. Their adjacent appearance in consequence #60 added a formalized version of Wonder Girl (Donna Troy) and gave the grouping a proper name – "The Teen Titans."
After just 1 more anthology series advent (in Showcase (1956) #59), the Teen Titans graduated into their own title in 1966. While many other teen heroes appeared, only one became a more permanent fellow member – Speedy, Green Pointer's sidekick. The team-up was revived in 1973 and so shuttered in 1978 as the heroes felt they were growing besides quondam to exist "teens."
Marv Wolfman and George Pérez reawakened the franchise in 1980. In an astounding act of creation, they introduced squad mainstays Cyborg, Starfire, and Raven in a preview story in DC Comics Presents (1978) #26, where they likewise reintroduced Creature Male child as "Changeling."
Wolfman and Pérez would go synonymous with the Teen Titans for the adjacent decade in the same way Chris Claremont was with the X-Men, who the Titans rivaled in popularity. Along the manner the co-writers introduced Slade Wilson as Deathstroke and changed Dick Grayson to Nightwing. Their characters fabricated it throughCrunch on Infinite Earths relatively unscathed as DC chose not to rock the boat of their most-popular squad franchise.
In 1988, the teens graduated to just being referred to equally "Titans." While that split in the title continues to recur through the nowadays day, at that place aren't hard lines effectually which heroes are "Teens" and which aren't, aside from Nightwing. Starfire, one time engaged to Nightwing, continues to appear in both iterations of the group interchangeably. This is complicated by the popularity of the Teen Titans in other media like cartoons, where the team tends to be anchored by a 1980-inspired lineup of Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, and Animal Boy.
In 1998, a relaunch ofTitans yielded a 3rd championship for the franchise –Young Justice. While the team name hasn't been reused since 2003, DC sometimes refers to their entire line of youthful, sub-Justice League heroes by that title.

The New Teen Titans by Wolfman & Pérez (1980 – 1985)
The Titans go on a 2-and-a-half-year publishing hiatus later Teen Titans (1966) #53 in 1978. Their break ends when the Teen Titans are reassembled by Raven and relaunched by the writing team of Marv Wolfman and George Pérez in The New Teen Titans (1980)[CBDB] in the latter half of 1980. It is later accompanied past a four-effect mini-series, Tales of the New Teen Titans, in 1982.
Now comes the tricky office.
The New Teen Titans (1980) changes its name toTales of the Teen Titans (1984) [CBDB] with event #41 to make fashion for a 2nd, simultaneous book of The New Teen Titans 1984 – besides written past Wolfman and Pérez. The renamedTales of the Teen Titans (1984) continues for another year and a half through issue #58 in October 1985, which is office of the lead-up toCrisis on Infinite Earths. Starting with #59, the championship features only reprinted stories.
Meanwhile, the newly-launchedThe New Teen Titans (1984)continues by Crisis on Infinite Earths (which hits information technology in problems #xiii-fourteen) through effect #49 in November 1988 with Wolfman however at the helm earlier changing its title toThe New Titans(1988). That will be covered in the next section.
By and large, the Teen Titans practice not experience manyinitial changes due to Crisis on Infinite Earths, though Donna Troy undergoes changes in the longer term due to the revision to Wonder Woman's origin.
The New Teen Titans (1980) #i-forty & Annuals ane-2 (Nov 1980 – Mar 1984)
+ Tales of the Teen Titans (1984) #41-58 & Annual iii (April 1985 – October 1985)
This iteration of the squad debuted with a preview story in DC Comics Presents (1978) #26 before graduating toThe New Teen Titans (1980)[CBDB]. The New Teen Titans (Drug Sensation Specials) (1983)
3 unique drug awareness issues titled Plague!, Boxing!, and Problem Kid, which are not reprinted at this time.
Mail service-Crunch Teen Titans (1984 – 1998)
The championship of this department is somewhat misleading. Allow me to explain.
Kickoff,Crisis on Space Earths did not have a major direct impact on the Titans, save for one character – Wonder Girl, Donna Troy. While Nightwing and Speedy also had ties to existing franchises that experienced changes inCrisis, neither were every bit comprehensive as the retcons to Wonder Woman's origin.
Equally a result of that, usingCrisis as a dividing line for the Teen Titans isn't as effective as it is for other DC titles and heroes. This is further complicated past at that place beingnesstwoTeen Titans ongoings running at the same fourth dimension whenCrisisarrived.
Tales of the New Teen Titans (1984) ends with the lead-up toCrunch in outcome #58 – which places it entirely in the prior menses. The relaunchedThe New Teen Titans (1984) is published in parallel toCrunch as early equally issue #vii, though it does non officially tie in until bug #13-14. And, it keeps runningpast Crisis – which hardly whatsoever DC series did aside from Batman and Superman series in the hundreds of issues.
As a result, I somewhat arbitrarily considerTales of the New Teen Titans (1984) to exist the Pre-Crisis Titans series and The New Teen Titans (1984) to be the Post-Crisis Titans series.
In 1988 DC was finishing the terminal wave of Mail service-Crisis relaunches, and The New Teen Titans (1984) changed its name toThe New Titans (1988) and continued its run until 1996! Forth the manner, a pair of supporting serial come and get – Teen Titans Spotlight (1986) and Team Titans (1992).
Then, in 1996, DC relaunches Teen Titans (1996) for ii years earlier transforming the franchise in 1998.
The New Teen Titans (1984) #i-49 & Almanac 1-four (Aug 1984 – Nov 1988)
